I’ve been on YC’s Cofounder Matching site for a few months, and I sometimes get asked by founders to sign an NDA before they’re willing to reveal their startup idea.
I always have to explain why I never do it. So, I decided to write a short blog post that I can refer them to. Here are my reasons.
Your idea is not that valuable
Yes, I know you spent months doing research, creating mockups, making plans. All of it has 0 value unless you bring in paying customers ASAP; and you obviously need help getting there.
Even afterwards, your plans won’t be worth much. You’ll probably change everything once you start building and getting real feedback.
I’m taking a risk, too
I’ve limited spare time, and I could’ve spent it talking to other cofounders, or working on my own ideas. Instead, I’m offering my expertise to help you achieve your dream, and you won’t have to pay a single dime upfront.
There’s a good chance I won’t get anything out of it. We’ll either have a fall out, or we’ll discover that the idea doesn’t actually work in the real world.
I’m the least of your worries
If I can steal your idea, how do you expect to fend off seasoned business experts who will pounce the moment they see even a hint of success?
Final note
I understand the instinct to protect your idea. But the best protection isn’t legal documents; it’s executing better and faster than anyone else can. And you should treasure those who can help you achieve that (doesn’t have to be me!).
